Human Trafficking Bust in Austin, Texas
Back in 2009 law enforcement uncovered a Human Trafficking ring right here in Austin.
Human Trafficking Awareness
Human Trafficking is also known as modern day slavery. Each year about 800,000 people are trafficked worldwide and 20,000 of those people are trafficked in the United States.
This crime is taking place everywhere in every city, and yours is no exception.
Trafficking victims are enslaved through force, fraud, and coercion to debt bondage, domestic servitude, physical labor, and prostitution. Most of these victims work seven days a week and often 18-plus hours a day. Victims feel helpless and hopeless after the abuse and pain they are forced to go through. They find it hard to trust in anyone or anything so they just give up on themselves and the fight.
Here is a public service announcement my group from course J340C at the University of Texas at Austin put together that is now on the Central Coalition Against Human Trafficking website.
Because Human Trafficking often goes unreported and not investigated people are ignorant of this crime. It is up people to raise awareness of this issue so that a stop can be put to this slavery (that some people thought was ended decades ago).
